What is Rokos Capital Management?

Rokos Capital Management, usually shortened to RCM, is a London-headquartered global alternative investment manager founded by Chris Rokos in 2015. The firm describes its approach as combining directional and relative-value trading across global macro asset classes. It is neither accurately described as a pure systematic fund nor, given its current scale and teams, as merely one trader's personal book.

Bloomberg reported that RCM managed about $22bn in April 2026. The firm is private and does not publish a live AUM ticker, so that figure is an authoritative media estimate rather than a company-certified daily number (Bloomberg, 9 April 2026).

Rokos Capital Management at a glance

  • Founded: 2015 by Chris Rokos
  • Head office: 23 Savile Row, London
  • Investor capital: about $22bn, reported April 2026
  • Regulatory AUM: $219.4bn in its 29 June 2026 Form ADV data
  • Reported employees: 310 in the same US regulatory filing
  • Offices listed by RCM: London, New York, Singapore and Abu Dhabi
  • Approach: directional and relative-value investing across global macro markets
  • Official application route: RCM careers
  • Quantt directory: Rokos Capital Management

The $22bn and $219.4bn figures measure different things. Presenting the larger number as ordinary hedge-fund investor capital would badly overstate the firm's conventional AUM.

Why is Rokos's regulatory AUM so much larger?

RCM's June 2026 US filing reports $219,439,595,264 of discretionary regulatory AUM, while contemporary financial reporting puts investor capital near $22bn. Macro funds use swaps, futures, options and other derivatives whose regulatory values can be counted on a gross basis. Regulatory AUM is therefore not the same as fund net asset value.

This is not a minor technicality. It changes comparisons. Use roughly $22bn when asking how much client capital RCM oversees; use $219.4bn only when explicitly discussing the Form ADV regulatory measure (RCM Form ADV, dated 29 June 2026).

RCM's 2026 filing also reported 310 employees, 68 of them in investment-advisory functions. That is a defined regulatory snapshot, not an estimate from social profiles. Separately, accounts for Rokos Services (UK) Limited, company number 09493764, reported UK service-company headcount of 248 for the year to 31 March 2025. The scopes differ, so the numbers should not be combined (Companies House, Rokos Services (UK) Limited).

What does Rokos trade?

RCM's own regulatory climate report says the firm combines directional and relative-value trading across global macro asset classes. Public materials and historical launch reporting identify fixed income, foreign exchange and equity-index products, with liquid emerging markets also in scope (RCM TCFD report, published 2024; Reuters, 12 August 2015).

The important split is not a tidy list of instruments. It is the difference between:

  • directional trades, where the portfolio benefits from a market moving broadly up or down; and
  • relative-value trades, where the thesis concerns the relationship between linked instruments, countries or maturities.

A rates view, for example, can be expressed through the level of yields, the slope of a curve, the gap between countries, volatility or the relationship between cash bonds and derivatives. Each expression has different carry, convexity, liquidity and event risk.

RCM has publicly referred to Macro, Equities, Credit, Emerging Markets, Systematic, Quant, Technology/AI and Portfolio Strategy teams. That supports a broader current organisation than a single founder book, but it does not disclose allocations or performance by team (RCM company update, 2026).

How has the firm changed since launch?

Chris Rokos co-founded Brevan Howard and, according to Reuters's launch report, generated about $4bn for its fund between 2004 and 2012. RCM began managing outside capital after a legal dispute with Brevan Howard ended in 2015. That history explains the firm's macro identity and its ability to launch with institutional backing.

The present-day business is more useful to candidates than launch mythology. A 310-person, multi-office manager needs independent risk, data, engineering, operations and control functions alongside portfolio managers. Bloomberg reported on 1 May 2026 that RCM had secured a full Abu Dhabi Global Market licence and taken space in Sky Tower, adding a fourth location to London, New York and Singapore (Bloomberg, 1 May 2026; RCM Abu Dhabi page, accessed 8 September 2026).

The firm remains founder-led, but public sources do not reveal current capital delegated to Chris Rokos versus other teams. Claims that his personal P&L "dominates" the firm or that employees cannot run books independently go beyond the available evidence.

Which careers are relevant at RCM?

RCM's live vacancies are the source of truth. Depending on the hiring cycle, roles can span portfolio management, quantitative research, macro and security analysis, software and data engineering, risk, operations and business functions. The existence, seniority and office of each role can change quickly.

The firm's public description suggests three broad technical problems:

Investment and quantitative research

Macro research has to connect an economic thesis to tradable instruments and a defined risk budget. Quantitative work may support systematic strategies, portfolio construction, execution or the discretionary teams. Do not assume every "quant" role builds standalone alpha.

Technology and data

Global multi-asset portfolios need consistent market data, pricing, execution, risk aggregation and monitoring across time zones. The relevant language and system design depend on the vacancy. RCM does not publish a first-party stack that assigns Python, C++ or Rust to particular layers.

Portfolio strategy and risk

Directional and relative-value books can share hidden exposures. Portfolio teams need to aggregate duration, volatility, basis, liquidity and stress scenarios even when managers use different instruments.

How should you prepare for an RCM interview?

RCM does not publish one firm-wide interview sequence, assessment weighting or reapplication policy. There is no primary-source timetable of a one-to-two-week take-home followed by four to six same-day interviews for every researcher.

Preparation should be role-specific:

  1. Build one current market view. State the catalyst, instrument, horizon, carry, downside and evidence that would invalidate it.
  2. Know the instrument mechanics. A macro opinion without DV01, convexity, option exposure or financing detail is not yet an investable idea.
  3. Explain portfolio interaction. Show how your trade behaves in risk-off conditions and what other positions might duplicate its exposure.
  4. For quants, defend the research design. Cover data timing, regime dependence, turnover and the gap between a forecast and a deployable strategy.
  5. For engineers, read the advert literally. Prepare for the stated system and language rather than a guessed firm-wide stack.

The Brevan Howard interview guide gives historical peer context. The quant hedge fund guide gives broader context on how systematic and discretionary investment processes can coexist.

What does multi-asset mean for a quant?

The same macro theme can appear in several books at once. A growth shock might be expressed through lower bond yields, a steeper volatility surface, weaker cyclical equities, wider credit spreads or a currency move. Adding the positions instrument by instrument misses the shared economic bet.

That makes cross-asset normalisation a core problem. Risk cannot be compared sensibly using cash notionals alone. Teams need sensitivities, scenario losses and liquidity estimates that remain meaningful across futures, swaps, options, bonds and equities. Correlations are useful, but they are least stable when a stress test matters most.

For candidates, this creates a valuable line of questioning. Ask whether the role builds forecasts for one vertical, supplies analytics to discretionary managers or works on firm-wide portfolio construction. Each is quantitative, but the data, feedback loop and definition of a good result differ sharply.

Also ask how the team distinguishes diversification by instrument from genuine diversification by underlying economic risk.

Pay and recruiting evidence

RCM's UK accounts reveal aggregate remuneration and partner profit, but those numbers do not establish a salary for a graduate quant or mid-level engineer. Undated £150,000 to £600,000 ranges mix unlike roles and should not be treated as a house ladder. Use a live vacancy, recruiter disclosure and the UK hedge-fund salary guide to frame a role-specific discussion.

Similarly, RCM does not publish annual acceptance rates, target universities, referral effects or a fixed 12-month reapplication rule. This guide can help you understand the firm; it cannot promise an assessment format or offer.
