On 13 July 2026 Hudson River Trading put its Summer 2027 internships live on its jobs board. The Algorithm Development posting lists a weekly base salary of $5,800 in New York, £4,350 in London and SGD 7,650 in Singapore, plus a signing bonus, company-paid housing and meals. HRT did not announce that applications were open until 4 August.
Three weeks is a long time when HRT promises to review each application within two weeks of it arriving.
Here is the short version. HRT runs five summer internship tracks for 2027: Algorithm Development (quant research and trading), an Algorithm Development PhD track, Software Engineering, Hardware Engineering and Data Science in New York and London. Summer internships run from late May to mid-August and are fully in person. You may apply to one posting only. The process is a coding test, one or two technical phone screens and a multi-round final, and passing the test does not guarantee an interview.
For the interview itself in more depth, see our HRT interview guide. This page is about the internship: which one to apply for, when, and what it pays.
The 2027 Internships
Everything in this table comes from HRT's own postings, checked on 29 September 2026.
| Programme | Offices | Who can apply | Weekly base |
|---|---|---|---|
| Algorithm Development (Quant Research & Trading) | New York, London, Singapore | Full-time undergraduate or master's students in a quantitative subject | $5,800 / £4,350 / SGD 7,650 |
| Algorithm Development PhD | New York, London, Singapore | Full-time PhD students | $5,800 / £4,350 / SGD 7,650 |
| Software Engineering (C++ or Python) | New York, Chicago, Austin, London, Singapore | Full-time undergraduates in computer science or a related field | $5,800 / £4,350 / SGD 7,650 (no figure given for Austin or Chicago) |
| Hardware Engineer | New York | Students graduating in 2028 | $5,800 |
| Data Scientist | New York, London | STEM students | $5,800 / £4,350 |
| PhD Winter Internship | New York | PhD students graduating between autumn 2027 and summer 2029 | $5,800 |
| Women in Trading and Technology (WiTTI), winter | New York | Undergraduates graduating between autumn 2028 and summer 2030 | $5,800 |
Three changes from the 2026 cycle stand out. The software engineering internship is now for undergraduates only, where the 2026 version also took master's and PhD students. Algorithm Development PhD students now have their own posting. And there is no Algorithm Trader internship or sophomore internship listed for 2027, even though HRT's own post on National Intern Day (31 July 2026) mentions both in the 2026 class. If either reappears, it will be on the jobs board first.
There is no off-cycle internship and no FPGA-titled internship. FPGA and ASIC work sits inside the Hardware Engineer internship, where interns "explore both Design and Verification".
Pay and Perks
The weekly base figures above are HRT's own. What changed this year is the signing bonus. The Summer 2026 postings said "5,800 USD and signing bonus of 25,000 USD (or local equivalent)". The 2027 postings for Algorithm Development, Software Engineering and Hardware say only "a competitive signing bonus", and the Data Scientist and winter postings mention no signing bonus at all. So do not assume the $25,000 carries over.
HRT's student page lists "fully-paid housing, travel allowances, office amenities like an on-site gym and game room, chef-prepared breakfast and lunch, dinner stipends". It also says the internship is "fully in-person".
HRT gives a weekly figure, not a total, and does not state the number of weeks, only "late-May to mid-August". Your total depends on your start and end dates. For comparison, the 2027 graduate postings for Algorithm Developers and Software Engineers give a US base salary of $300,000, with "similarly locally competitive" base salaries elsewhere. Our HRT salary guide covers graduate and senior pay; figures there are estimates, not numbers from HRT.
Dates and Deadlines
- Summer 2027 postings went live: 13 July 2026, according to the jobs board. One Reddit applicant on 27 July said they had applied "12 days ago (as soon as it opened basically)".
- Public announcement: 4 August 2026, on HRT's LinkedIn.
- Summer closing date: none published. HRT asks you to allow up to two weeks for your application to be reviewed.
- PhD Winter Internship and WiTTI: applications close on 16 October 2026. Both programmes start on 4 January 2027. The PhD programme is a three-week "introduction to quantitative research"; WiTTI lasts two, three or four weeks, depending on your university's winter break.
Last cycle gives a sense of the window. The Summer 2026 postings appeared on student trackers in late July 2025 and came off job-board mirrors in February 2026. That is a long window, but HRT reviews each application within about two weeks rather than waiting for a deadline, so applying in the first few weeks makes sense. Our quant internships guide has the equivalent dates for other firms.
One Application Only
This rule shapes your whole strategy. Every posting says: "Please apply to the ONE role you are most interested in and we will consider you for all open positions when reviewing your application." Pick the track that fits your CV best, not the one that sounds most glamorous. The second half of that sentence means a strong candidate in the wrong queue can still be moved.
Which Track to Choose
Algorithm Development is quant research and trading in one role. Interns "rotate between our high- and mid-frequency trading teams, as well as our machine learning teams". The posting says "Python is a must; C++ is desired for those interested in low-latency trading". This is the track for maths, statistics, physics and computer science students who want to build trading models.
Software Engineering is for people who want to build the systems. The posting says "Knowledge of trading and/or financial markets is not required" and asks for Python, C or C++. HRT's engineering blog splits engineering into Trading Tech (about 70% C++, focused on latency) and Research & Development (about 70% Python, focused on scale). If you are unsure which of the two you are, our guide to how to become a quant developer sets out the difference.
Hardware Engineer asks for digital logic, SystemVerilog, C++ or Python, and Linux, with FPGA or ASIC experience, UVM and cocotb as a bonus. It is the narrowest track and the one with the fewest candidate reports.
Data Scientist is new for 2027. It asks for Python "at the level of 'Python for Data Analysis' by Wes McKinney", and names Kaggle competitions and personal data projects as a plus.
The Coding Test
HRT's FAQ says technical interviews "usually consist of a coding test, 1-2 technical phone screens, and an onsite multi-round final interview", and that length and topics vary by role. HRT's postings say using AI in interviews or assessments is "strictly prohibited, unless otherwise instructed or agreed upon".
HRT does not publish the test format, and candidate reports disagree:
- Software engineering intern, August 2025 (Reddit): three questions in two hours. One candidate described a dynamic programming problem and two string manipulation problems, and reported a score of 747 out of 900.
- Software engineering intern, 2027 cycle (prep sites): four questions scored out of 600, in the style of CodeSignal. This comes from prep and coaching sites, so treat it as unconfirmed.
- Algorithm Development: reports range from 70 to 150 minutes, with two to four problems. One 2024 full-time test had a "fancy number" counting problem, a union-find problem and a tree merge.
The platform is also contested. A 2021 HRT blog post said tests were "typically conducted over Hackerrank or Codility". Several reports since 2022 describe CodeSignal.
Is the Test Sent Automatically?
Not reliably any more. Older reports described the test arriving automatically for US applicants. Over the last two cycles, several candidates say otherwise. One was "rejected before the OA". Another was "rejected after getting perfect on the OA, so it's not auto anymore". Others on r/csMajors describe a second CV screen after the test. The safe reading is that the test is one filter among several, and a full score does not guarantee an interview.
After the Test
Algorithm Development candidates describe two virtual interviews, one "highly stats based" and one coding, taking about three weeks in total. One January 2026 report describes a first round of a "basic stats question + coding part where you run simulation to check your intuition".
The intern final is reported as four one-hour rounds:
- Programming: extend an existing C++ client and server trading codebase, adding a modify function alongside add and cancel.
- Data analysis: work through a dataset in a Jupyter notebook with pandas and seaborn, with documentation allowed.
- System design.
- Maths.
The same candidate said HRT may cut the day short if the morning rounds go badly. A prep site also describes a notebook data-analysis round, so that one is reported by two sources.
Worked Questions
The first is a problem reported by candidates. The other two are our own examples, written in the style the reports describe.
1. Fancy numbers (reported, 2024 test). A positive integer is "fancy" if its base-4 representation uses only the digits 0 and 1. How many fancy numbers are there below n, for n up to 10⁹?
Read a fancy number's base-4 digits as a binary string and you get an ordinary positive integer. That mapping keeps order: bigger binary strings give bigger fancy numbers. Since 4¹⁵ is just over 10⁹, a fancy number below n has at most 15 digits, so there are at most 2¹⁵ - 1 = 32,767 of them. Walk through them in order and stop at the first one that reaches n:
def count_fancy(n): # Reinterpret the binary digits of m as base-4 digits. count, m = 0, 1 while True: value, bits, place = 0, m, 1 while bits: value += (bits & 1) * place bits >>= 1 place *= 4 if value >= n: return count count += 1 m += 1
For n = 5, the fancy numbers are 1 and 4 (5 is 11 in base 4, which is not below 5), so the answer is 2. The interviewer will want to hear why the order is preserved before you write any code.
2. A biased estimator (our example, in the reported style). You estimate a variance with (1/n) Σ(Xᵢ - X̄)². Is it biased?
Yes. Its expected value is ((n - 1)/n)σ², so it underestimates the true variance, because the deviations are measured from the sample mean, which sits closer to the data than the true mean does. Dividing by n - 1 instead removes the bias. Be ready to show where the n - 1 comes from.
3. Check it by simulation (our example, in the reported style). How many rolls of a fair die do you expect before you see two sixes in a row?
Let E₀ be the expected number of rolls still to come when your last roll was not a six, and E₁ when it was. Then E₁ = 1 + (5/6)E₀ and E₀ = 1 + (5/6)E₀ + (1/6)E₁. Substituting gives E₀/36 = 7/6, so E₀ = 42. Then do what the reported round asks for and check your answer by simulation:
import random def rolls_until_double_six(): rolls, last_six = 0, False while True: rolls += 1 six = random.randint(1, 6) == 6 if six and last_six: return rolls last_six = six trials = 200_000 print(sum(rolls_until_double_six() for _ in range(trials)) / trials) # about 42

Inside the Internship
The Algorithm Development posting promises "Tech Talks that provide an overview of markets and HRT's trading philosophy", "a curriculum of speakers, trading games, mentorships, and social events", and close work with full-time mentors. HRT's 31 July 2026 post mentions interns giving "final presentations of the projects from their first two rotations".
The projects are real work. An HRT blog post from 24 August 2026 says: "Every year, our interns take on serious, independent projects." Its examples include Z-ordering Iceberg tables for a "20-25% improvement in average query time", and a shared-memory stall monitor. It also notes that SmallGrid, one of HRT's internal tools, "started out as a summer internship project in 2021". A 4 September 2026 post describes an Algorithm Development intern in HRT AI Labs building a market simulator to compare reinforcement learning methods for trade execution.
Return Offers
HRT does not publish a return-offer rate. Its blog posts about recent intern classes say the featured interns went on to join full time, but those are chosen examples. Figures of "80 to 90%" on some prep sites have no source we could find, and commenters in a 2023 Reddit thread suggest HRT's rate "might be a bit lower" than at some peers. We would not plan around any number.
Other Ways In
First- and second-year students have their own routes. Inside HRT is "a three-day immersive program for first and second-year students" in New York; the 2026 edition ran from 18 to 20 May. Explore HRT is a multi-day spring programme in New York, London and Singapore with one-to-one mentoring. A mirror of the 2026 London posting says selection was an online assessment and a 60-minute interview, and that taking part "may result in fast-tracked consideration for future internship opportunities". WiTTI and the PhD Winter Internship, above, are both paid at the same weekly rate as the summer programmes.
HRT also sponsors the International Olympiad in Informatics and the ICPC Europe Championship. If you have competition results, put them near the top of your CV.
Where This Guide Goes Wrong
Everything about the test and the interviews comes from a few dozen anonymous candidate reports and prep sites, and they disagree on length, question count and platform. HRT changes the programmes between cycles: this year it dropped two tracks, added two and narrowed eligibility. We have no reliable data on how many interns HRT takes, acceptance rates or return-offer rates, and we have not guessed. The worked questions labelled as ours are illustrations of reported topics, not leaked questions.
Recruiting Notes
Pay figures here are taken from HRT's 2027 postings as of 29 September 2026. They are base pay only; bonuses, housing and totals vary by programme, office and year. Nothing on this page guarantees a test, an interview or an offer. Check HRT's jobs board before you apply, because postings change during the cycle.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does an HRT intern make?
HRT's 2027 summer postings list a weekly base salary of $5,800 in New York, £4,350 in London and SGD 7,650 in Singapore, plus company-paid housing and meals. The Algorithm Development, Software Engineering and Hardware postings add "a competitive signing bonus". The 2026 postings named a $25,000 signing bonus; the 2027 ones do not give a figure.
When do HRT internship applications open?
The Summer 2027 postings went live on HRT's jobs board on 13 July 2026, and HRT announced them on 4 August. No closing date is published for the summer programmes. The PhD Winter Internship and WiTTI close on 16 October 2026.
Is the HRT online assessment automatic?
Not reliably. Earlier reports described the coding test arriving automatically for US applicants, but over the last two cycles candidates report rejections both before the test and after perfect scores. Expect a CV review as well as the test.
How long is the HRT internship?
HRT says its summer internships "run from late-May to mid-August" and does not give a number of weeks. The winter programmes are shorter: three weeks for the PhD Winter Internship and two to four weeks for WiTTI, both starting on 4 January 2027.
Can I apply to more than one HRT internship?
No. HRT's postings ask you to apply to "the ONE role you are most interested in" and say the firm will consider you for all open positions when reviewing your application.
Does HRT have internships for first- and second-year students?
There is no sophomore summer internship posted for 2027. First- and second-year students can apply to Inside HRT and Explore HRT, the spring programmes, and eligible undergraduates can apply to the WiTTI winter internship.
